In the introduction year, A.B. Stout described it as:
" The rich orange-red coloring (orange-rufous) of the blades the broad midzone of oxblood red in the petals, and the greenish orange throat of the flowers combine to give outstanding character to this clone. The flowers are full and about 5 inches in spread and the period of flowering begins in late June. The scapes stand about 3 feet tall. A good showing of flowers has been made during the past 8 years. The plant has an evergreen habit. The year 1945 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the New York Botanical Garden. Various members of the Garden's staff, including the Director, collaborated in the selection and naming of this plant. "
